Aloha everyone,
In April 2024, at Keiki Labs, we recently celebrated Earth Day with a workshop dedicated to exploring the wonders of water, understanding its crucial role in sustaining life on our planet. Here’s a glimpse into the enriching experiences our young scientists encountered:
Clouds in a Jar
One of the most exciting experiments involved creating clouds in a jar. By simulating the process of evaporation and condensation, children witnessed firsthand how clouds form in the sky. As they pressed and released the bottle, they observed the transformation of water vapor into clouds, sparking awe and curiosity.
Rain Clouds Simulation
Another captivating experiment allowed children to make rain clouds in a jar. Adding blue water to shaving cream clouds, they learned about precipitation and how heavy clouds release water droplets, mimicking a rainy day. It was a hands-on way to understand the water cycle and the phenomenon of rain.
Water Purification
Understanding the importance of clean and safe water, our young scientists delved into water purification methods. First, we created colorful ‘waste water’ using glitter and food coloring for a fun twist. Then, using simple materials like a funnel, coffee filter, and color-catching sheet, they learned how to remove solid particles and impurities from their waste water. It was a valuable lesson in environmental stewardship and the significance of water conservation.
Solar S’Mores!
In addition, everyone enjoyed S’mores made using a pizza box donated from Little Caesars Keaa’u, which we transformed into a solar oven. It was not only a tasty indulgence but also a demonstration of sustainable practices, showcasing how we can harness renewable energy for everyday activities.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the participants for their enthusiasm and curiosity throughout the workshop. Your eagerness to learn and explore inspires us to continue our mission of fostering environmental awareness and scientific curiosity in young minds.
Special thanks to Little Caesars Keaa’u for generously donating pizza boxes, which we converted into a solar oven for our S’mores treat. Your support made our workshop even more memorable and sustainable!
