At Keiki Labs, where imagination meets science, we were thrilled to return to our monthly workshops in August after the summer break. Our first-ever exploration of electromagnetism took place on August 28th, creating a whirlwind of discovery and excitement from 3 to 4 PM!
Workshop Highlights
Magnets 101: Our adventure began with an introduction to the magical world of magnets. Through interactive and playful activities, the children discovered the enchanting push and pull of magnets. This foundational understanding of magnetic poles and interactions sparked their natural curiosity and set imaginations alight, paving the way for the exciting discoveries to come.
Visualizing Magnetic Fields: Next, our young scientists transformed the invisible into the visible. Armed with iron powder, they revealed the hidden beauty of magnetic fields, creating mesmerizing patterns that blended science with art. This captivating activity made complex scientific concepts accessible and engaging, turning learning into a delightful experience.
Electricity Meets Magnetism: Our excitement peaked as we introduced electromagnetism for the first time through the Magic Paper Clip Experiment. The kids were thrilled to see how electricity could transform a simple nail into a magnet, demonstrating the wonders of electromagnetism in a way that was both educational and entertaining. This spark-tacular experiment turned learning into pure joy!
Building a Homopolar Motor: The grand finale of our workshop was the construction of homopolar motors. Crafting the wire parts proved to be a bit challenging, but our young scientists tackled it with enthusiasm and creativity. While not everyone managed to get their motors running perfectly, each attempt was a triumph, showcasing their perseverance and innovative spirit. This experience was a fantastic learning opportunity for us all, and we’re excited to refine this activity for future sessions. Each participant left with a working wire to continue their exploration at home, carrying the spirit of scientific inquiry with them.
At Keiki Labs, we believe that learning is a joyful journey. We are committed to making science fun, safe, and accessible, and we’re grateful to have shared this adventure with your child. Thank you for being an integral part of our vibrant community! We look forward to sparking even more curiosity and smiles in our future workshops, inspiring the next generation of thinkers, inventors, and dreamers, one fun-filled experiment at a time!
