Illuminating Hope: Exploring Rainbows and Science at the HAAS Science Expo

On February 7, 2025, Keiki Labs had the privilege of volunteering at the Hawaii Academy of Arts and Science (HAAS) Science Expo at the Pahoa Community Center. Engaging with over 250 enthusiastic young learners, we explored the fascinating science of light and rainbows—a symbol of hope in Hawaiian culture.

Vibrant Learning Connections

At Keiki Labs, we believe learning should be exciting. Our focus on rainbows highlighted both their beauty and cultural significance. Using a prism, we demonstrated how light separates into seven colors, captivating the children as they witnessed science in action. We aimed to bridge science and Hawaiian culture, making it relatable and accessible.

Diving into Light Science

We emphasized that light is energy traveling as waves! The students eagerly explored the primary colors of light—red, blue, and green—and participated in a fun experiment mixing colors to create white light. The excitement in the room showcased that science is vibrant and dynamic!

Joyful Discovery

To conclude, we handed out diffraction grating glasses, and the joy on the children’s faces as they saw light split into a spectrum was priceless. This moment embodied our mission at Keiki Labs: to ensure education thrives in a fun environment.
