Exploring Reactions with Smarties

Introduction

On September 23rd and 27th, the “The Chemistry in the Smarties” event unfolded—a delightful exploration of science for young minds in grades K-5. Let’s dive into the highlights of these days.

Highlights

Acid and Base Reactions

Our young participants embarked on a flavorful journey into the world of acids and bases. Through hands-on experiences, they discovered that these two substances are like characters in a science story.

Fizz-tastic Reactions

Kids combined acids and bases on their palms and witnessed the incredible fizz and coolness of endothermic reactions. It was like having a mini science show in the palm of their hands, sparking excitement and awe.

Coolness of Glucose

Kids tasted glucose and compared it to regular table sugar, confirming that glucose has a much stronger cooling effect. It was a taste test adventure that left them pondering the wonders of science behind their favorite candies.

Hands-on Smarties Creation

I turned our young participants into “candy scientists.” They learned about each ingredient and how to use droppers, mix various powders, add food coloring, and even shape candies using molds.

Colossal Bubbles

At the conclusion of the “The Chemistry in the Smarties” event, we had a fantastic and bubbly surprise for our young scientists. Laughter filled the air as bubbles of all shapes and sizes danced around, leaving your children in awe of the beauty of science.
