Celebrating World Ocean Day at Mokupāpapa Discovery Center

On Saturday, June 7, 2025, Keiki Labs joined forces with 16 other organizations to celebrate World Ocean Day and Get Into Your Sanctuary Day at the Mokupāpapa Discovery Center in Hilo. This collaborative event drew 891 participants, all united in their appreciation for the ocean’s cultural, natural, and economic significance.

Event Highlights

Cultural Performances

The festivities commenced with a captivating hula performance by the Hula Sisters, setting a vibrant tone for the day’s activities.

Educational Exhibits and Activities

Attendees explored a variety of informational booths, each offering insights into ocean conservation and marine life. Keiki Labs contributed by hosting interactive science activities designed to engage young minds and foster a love for learning.

Special Screening

The event concluded with a special screening of the new film “OCEANS” by David Attenborough, which prominently featured Papahānaumokuākea. This film provided a profound look into the wonders of the ocean and the importance of preserving these vital ecosystems.

Keiki Labs’ Contribution: Hands-On Ocean Acidification Experiment

At Keiki Labs, we are committed to making science accessible, fun, and safe. To highlight the impact of ocean acidification on marine ecosystems, we designed an engaging, hands-on experiment for the community.

Ocean Acidification Demonstration

We focused on ocean acidification and its impact on marine ecosystems using eggshells and vinegar for hands-on experiments. By immersing eggshells in vinegar, participants observed the dissolution of calcium carbonate, simulating how increased CO₂ levels in the ocean can affect marine organisms with calcium carbonate shells.

Ocean Acitification

Microscopic Observation

To delve deeper into the chemical reactions, we utilized a microscope borrowed from the Mokupāpapa Discovery Center. Participants examined the gas formation during the reaction, observing the effervescence caused by carbon dioxide release.

Natural pH Indicator Experiment

We also explored the use of natural pH indicators, such as red cabbage juice, to demonstrate pH changes. By blowing CO₂ into ocean water, attendees witnessed the color change in the pH indicator, illustrating how increased atmospheric CO₂ can lower ocean pH, leading to acidification.

Engaging the Community

These interactive activities provided a tangible understanding of ocean acidification, fostering curiosity and environmental stewardship among participants. The hands-on nature of the experiments made complex scientific concepts accessible and engaging for all ages.

Gratitude and Acknowledgments

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff and administration of the Mokupāpapa Discovery Center for hosting such an inspiring event. Your dedication to fostering a love for learning in your community is commendable. A special thank you to Lance Matsumoto for volunteering for our activities.

Thanks Lance

Looking Ahead

Reflecting on this enlightening day, Keiki Labs is excited to continue offering engaging science activities that inspire curiosity and learning. Stay tuned for upcoming workshops, summer camps, and community events designed to nurture a community of young science explorers. We believe that learning is most powerful when it’s fun, truthful, and safe—just like the spirit of World Ocean Day at Mokupāpapa Discovery Center.

Thank you for being part of our journey to inspire the next generation of thinkers, inventors, and dreamers through the joy of science!
